Did you know that the city of Heinola has gained fame in Finland and globally for its disc golf?
Heinola is home to one of the world’s best disc golf courses: Kippasuo DiscGolfPark World.
The local club has been building the course with great passion for nearly 20 years. In 2024, the course was ranked the second-best disc golf course in the world by the scoring service UDisc. The same course has hosted several professional competitions, and in 2025 it will host the Finnish Disc Golf Championships.
When the course project and the local club caught the city’s attention, they could hardly have imagined what the disc golf course would bring to the city.
The course hosts tens of thousands of disc golf rounds annually, which naturally has a significant impact on the well-being of the city’s residents, as the course is completely free of charge.
The figures show that the city of Heinola also benefits economically from the Kippasuo disc golf course. In 2023, approximately 40,000 rounds were played on the course. Nearly half of the players traveled over 100 kilometers to Heinola. About 6.5% of the players came from over 300 kilometers away – players from 18 different countries in total.
Conservative estimates suggest that the Kippasuo course brought around 2,000,000 euros in tourism revenue to Heinola in 2023.
Heinola sees that disc golf tourism will continue to grow: “Yes, disc golf tourism is now a big deal,” says Jere Pohjankoski, the managing director of the club that maintains the course.
Research supports Pohjankoski’s view of the trend. According to a study published in 2023, 66.9% of disc golfers have traveled for disc golf, and 30.9% are considering doing so.
